Meta-Metasemantics, or the Quest for the One True Metasemantics

Abstract What determines the meaning of a context-sensitive expression in context? It is standardly assumed that, for given type, there will be unitary answer to this question; most literature on subject involves arguments designed show that one particular metasemantic proposal superior specific set alternatives. The task present essay explore whether warranted assumption, or quest true metasemantics might Quixotic one. We argue are good reasons—much better than commonly appreciated—for thinking latter, but nevertheless remains significant scope theorizing. conclude by outlining our preferred option, pluralism.
